Thabo Bester, a convicted felon who was born on June 13, 1986, staged his own suicide in order to escape from the Mangaung Correctional Center in South Africa in 2022. Prior to being captured on April 8, 2023 in Arusha, Tanzania, he managed to elude authorities for over a year.

Bester rose to fame as a result of his criminal and con artist activities. While he was behind bars, he and Magudumana ran the fraudulent construction company Arum Properties, obtaining millions of rand in payments from clients for incomplete construction projects.
He went gone for a year after it was believed that he lit himself on fire in his cell in May 2022 to commit suicide, but a recent post-mortem examination revealed that the burnt body found in his cell was not his. This information prompted the beginning of a manhunt in March 2023.
Before being sent to prison, he had been found guilty of a number of offenses, including the rape and murder of two women he had met on Facebook. He was convicted guilty in 2012 of murdering Nomfundo Tyhulu, a model, whom he had abused. In 2011, he was found guilty of robbing and raping two other women. He was given a life in prison sentence.

The Department of Home Affairs never publicly acknowledged Bester’s South African citizenship. According to Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi, Bester was caught in Tanzania in April 2023 while impersonating as Tom Williams Kelly and was found to be in possession of an American passport. The rough childhood of Bester and the fact that his mother, Maria Mabaso, was never permitted to register Bester after his birth at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on June 13, 1986, were blamed, according to the South African Minister of Home Affairs, Motsoaledi.

Breaking out of prison
Bester staged his own demise by placing a body in his cell and setting it ablaze. He then managed to escape from Mangaung Correctional Services on May 3, 2022.
When the Correctional Services Department established that Bester’s DNA was absent from the charred body, the escape was made known.
An announcement was made on Facebook by the private security firm Fidelity that it would pay R100 000 for any tip that led to the arrest and conviction of the suspected Facebook rapist.
