James was raised in Paarl, Western Cape, on a wine estate. James was a liberal, despite the conservative and secessionist views of his family. He had a Dutch Reformed father. Early on, he and his family argued about his career decisions.
James struck a pact with his family when he was a young man that if he received his WP-colors in sports, he would then be able to continue with his chosen courses. After finishing both this and his military service, he made the decision to pursue acting.

Between 1995 and 2001, James took lessons in acting, dancing, singing, and the flute. James trained with the well-known choreographer Joan Brickhill, a “grand dame” of South African theater who was nominated for a Tony Award, from 1997 to 2001.
